Employment law specialist

Charles Newman

Charles, an experienced employment law specialist, is well used to navigating treacherous waters. Last October he and his wife swam the 2.5km from Alcatraz Island to the mainland in San Francisco Bay. A keen open water swimmer, Charles raised sponsorship money from his “escape from Alcatraz” for ICAN, a leading charity supporting young children with communication difficulties of which he is a trustee.

” The Alcatraz swim was quite nerve racking, because we ended up doing it in the middle of a storm and the waves were huge! The currents are very strong most of the time, there is only a short window of opportunity each day to do the swim, so we couldn’t wait for the weather to get better.

Legend has it that the sharks would get any prisoners who tried to escape from the island, but in reality it was the cold water and strong currents that posed the greatest threat.

I am not the strongest swimmer (my wife is much better than me) so I was very pleased to make it across, and I was delighted with the amount of money I managed to raise for ICAN.”

Charles applies the same determined, energetic approach that served him so well in San Francisco when working with his clients, who praise his practical, commercial approach.

Charles brings over 21 years’ experience as an employment lawyer, including 10 years as a partner at DAC Beachcroft, following stints at Slaughter and May, Rowe and Maw (now Mayer Brown) and Ashursts.

His particular specialisms are TUPE, organisational change, pension and benefit change programmes, and board level disputes and departures. While at DAC Beachcroft he set up and led the Employment team’s specialist TUPE unit for many years.
